Our members conduct a wide range of research related to weight-centrism and weight-inclusivity across these six main areas.
- Scope of the Problem
- Our goal is to examine the scope of the problems associated with promoting weight-centric approaches toward health such as weight stigma, discrimination, disordered eating, and weight cycling.
- Example Articles from Collaborative Members: Exploring weight stigma in the gym on The Biggest Loser, Weight-normative messaging predominates on TikTok
- Education
- Our goal is to develop, implement, and evaluate weight-inclusivity educational materials for pre-service and in-service professionals.
- Example Article from Collaborative Members: Weight Inclusive Thinking for Fitness Spaces (WIT FITS): An online weight-inclusive intervention for exercise professionals
- Practice/Implementation
- Our assumption is that once professionals learn about weight-inclusivity, they will practice differently. Therefore, our goal is to develop, implement, and evaluate interventions that help professionals implement a weight-inclusive approach in their practice. We also examine the experiences of professionals, clients, patients, and students practicing from a weight-centric vs. weight-inclusive approach.
- Example Article from Collaborative Members: University Coaching for Activity and Nutrition (UCAN): A weight-inclusive health coaching program
- Evaluation
- Our assumption is that when professionals practice from a weight-inclusive approach, this will lead to different (and better) client outcomes. Therefore, our goal is to evaluate the outcomes of weight-inclusive approaches.
- Example Article from Collaborative Members: FitU: A peer-led non-diet behavior change intervention
- Advocacy/Policy
- Our goal is to advocate for weight-inclusivity through research, practice, and policy.
- Example Article from Collaborative Members: An evidence-based rationale for adopting weight-inclusive health policy
- Methodological Refinements
- Our goal is to refine and improve methodological approaches to researching weight stigma and weight-inclusivity.
